Women in aviation

Women have been involved in aviation from the very beginning of the development of airplanes, helicopters and space travel.

Flying powered aircrafts since 1908, earning the name ‘Aviatrices’.

Although, up until the 1970’s, most women were restricted to working only privately or in support roles.

The first two decades of powered flight consisted of female pilots breaking speed, endurance and altitude records. Even competing and winning against men in air races. Women on almost every continent began to fly, meaning they were performing in aerial shows, parachuting, and transporting passengers.

From all over the world, women helped with the war efforts during WW2. Though mostly restricted from military flight, many of the female pilots flew in auxiliary services.

In the 50s and 60s the women were restricted, only being allowed to serve in support fields such as flight simulation training, air traffic control, or as flight attendants.

It took up until the 1970s for women to be able to participate in military service in most countries.

Today, women all around the world are interested in having a career in aviation.

The number of female airline pilots across the globe is as little as 3%. But while the overall number of women in aviation has increased, the percentage still remains the same.

Recently on the HICAMO Podcast, we interviewed Fareeha Ahmed who is a commercial pilot student.

Fareeha got into the industry through doing a University course on commercial pilot training combined with a bachelor's degree, where she was one of just 5 girls in her class.

But already, throughout her years in the industry, she has noticed an increase in more and more girls coming on-board.

When asked what advice she would give to young girls who are wanting to get into aviation, she replied - “Being a girl in aviation, I’m sure other girls are scared about how it’s going to be for them. But if they do not break that barrier and see what’s out there, they’re going to stop themselves from reaching their goals.”

You should definitely check out the podcast episode with Fareeha if this is a field you’re interested in, or even if you’re unsure and just want to learn about something new!

It’s a super informative episode, packed with all the answers to your burning questions.

As someone who has never previously been particularly interested in aviation, I thoroughly enjoyed the podcast and learnt some things that I wouldn’t have otherwise known.

Like did you know that most pilots are afraid of heights? Turns out it doesn’t matter, you can hate heights and still fly thousands of feet above the ground - crazy.

Despite the history of women in aviation, you shouldn’t let the past stop you from pursuing your dreams of becoming a pilot if it is something that you’re passionate about. After all, times have changed now where anybody can do anything!
