DIFFERENT ACCOUNTING ROLES

This essential industry means that accounting jobs are likely to be in demand as long as money exists. As accountants are required to keep businesses within their budget and foresee future spending implications.

Let’s take a look at some of the job roles out there!

Please note that these are not all of the roles in Accounting, just some of them. 

Accounting Practice - In this setting you’re likely to perform accounting roles for a number of clients.

Potential job roles are:

  • Bookkeeper - Responsible for recording all of the company’s spending, including purchases, invoices and sales, providing accurate information on company outgoings. 

  • Auditor (Internal or External) - Internal auditors help minimise risk within the company, providing evaluations of company financial and operational activities, whilst ensuring that companies follow proper procedures and function efficiently. Whereas external auditors come in about once or twice a year and assess the accuracy of the company’s financial statements and records to make sure they’re reflecting a true report. 

  • Tax Accountant - Involves researching tax laws and regulations, completing corporate tax returns, providing assistance during tax audits, responding to notices from tax authorities and more. 

  • Forensic Accountant - Investigating fraud and other financial misrepresentation using professional expertise in finance. Including analysing financial information to allow lawyers to prosecute criminals such as those funding illegal activities, along with insurance companies and other clients to resolve disputes.

Industry Accountant - This sector usually involves working for a specific company.

Job roles may include:

  • Financial Accountant (sometimes covers tax as well) -  Consists of creating effective, cost-efficient budget settings by providing, examining, and analysing financial reports and records. As well as sometimes preparing and submitting tax documents. Entry role example; Assistant Financial Accountant.

  • Management Accountant - These accountants are responsible for preparing financial reporting and analysis for the management of a company. Helping decide and manage company investments, risk management, budgeting, planning and strategising. Entry role example; Assistant Management Accountant.

Public Sector - This department is responsible for managing public service money for the members of the public. 

Public Accountant - Working in the public sector providing services to a wide range of clients among the likes of individual taxpayers, large businesses, government agencies, nonprofits and educational institutions for example the NHS, Central Government, etc. 

A role in public accounting consists of different reporting requirements and processes. Such as conducting external audits, income statements, quarterly reports, and earnings reports.

In this role you’ll find yourself handling financial matters such as production budgets and royalty distributions. Sports Team Accounting - For those sports fanatics out there, you can focus your accounting skills into a role handling budgets and payroll for a professional sports team. Accounting for MI5 Agents / Ministry of Defence - Utilise your accounting and financial skills to investigate corporate and business crimes. Or ensure the delivery of capability and capacity to the armed forces whilst securing the best value for the taxpayer. Accounts and finance skills are in fact considered crucial among these fields. Environmental Accounting - Passionate about the environment? You can help businesses become more eco-friendly and profitable with a role like this one.
